GRAND OPENING | TWIN OAKS BRANCH LIBRARY

UNVEILING | BLACK WELL ART MOBILE
Austin, Texas (August 21, 2010) The City of Austin Art In Public Places program commissioned local artist Stephanie Strange to create a mobile for the entrance tower of the new Twin Oaks Branch Library. Comprised of forty repurposed typewriters, this hanging sculpture titled Black Well is an homage to the recorded word. It is housed in a thirty five foot tower and is 18′ x 8′ of suspended feet. The artist used the punch and strike keys of manual typewriters to create a variety of forms and movements that give the effect of a waterfall as the viewer looks up. Several of the typewriters were donated by library patrons who will now see them preserved and transformed as part of the artwork. Stephanie Strange lives in Bastrop, Texas where she pursues her art career which often includes typewriter key work on paper. This new and very sustainable branch library facility was designed by Hatch + Ulland Owen Architects in keeping with Green Building Program concepts and is presently being finished by Jamail & Smith Construction.

Featured Artist: Stephanie Strange.

The projected Grand Opening for the new Twin Oaks Branch is August 21, 2010 and the Austin Public Library will partner with the community to make the event a very special and festive occasion. Located at 1800 South Fifth Street, at the corner of South Fifth Street and West Mary Street.

A TWO PERSON SHOW
featuring works by Margaret Adie and Stephanie Strange

The objects used in the assemblages of Margaret Adie cease to be themselves and are given new life: often the direction is dictated by the objects themselves. the result is a thoughtful and often whimsical mix of memories and associations.

In this body of work by Stephanie Strange, the typewriter takes on a dual role of both creator and creation. Drawings grow from typed characters, while electric typewriter keys lend themselves to sculpture. The typewriter is a medium to bring into existence visual stories.
