Black Well, a Public Art commission located in Twin Oaks Library, Austin, Texas
Black Well hangs in the entrance tower of the Twin Oaks library and gives homage to the printed word, as it reminds visitors of the mechanical device that was a vehicle for communication for more than a century. Strange was commissioned by the Art in Public Places program of Austin, Texas to create a permanent artwork for the library. In keeping with the many green building features of the building, the artwork mobile is comprised of forty repurposed typewriters. Strange used the punch and strike keys of typewriters to create a variety of forms and movements inspired by the characteristics of a waterfall. Typewriters were donated in part by library patrons, who will see them preserved and transformed as part of the artwork.
